At the end of the program, you will feel healthier, and you will be healthier.

PREP Saves Member From Knee Surgery
Hyde Park Resident Fran Newman relocated from New York City to Cincinnati in December 2012, in order to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. She had a recurring knee problem at the time, and went to visit an orthopedic surgeon in June 2013. The doctor injected her with a shot of cortisone and prescribed a workout regime, but told her that she would most probably need surgery down the road.

Her son and daughter-in-law were members at Cincinnati Sports Club, and had read about the Physician Referred Exercise Program (PREP), where new members could join the club for 60 days for just $60.00 with a prescription from their doctor. Fran’s doctor readily complied, and she began working with Kristen, a trainer at Cincinnati Sports Club who helped put together her routine and protocol, based upon his specifications. With Kristen’s guidance, Fran began a 5 day a week ½ hour workout regime, which included a combination of walking, weighted leg lifts, and riding the stationery bike, in order to improve her strength and balance.

As Fran began adopting this routine, she realized that her knee pain was diminishing day by day. When she returned to her physician for her follow-up visit after 6 weeks on the program, she was pain-free for the first time in several years. Her doctor told her that her knee condition was still present, but since she wasn’t having any pain, they could postpone the surgery. He encouraged her to stick with the program – which she has. Fran has been so energized and uplifted by this program, that she even shows up at Cincinnati Sports Club on Saturdays and Sunday and walks a mile on each of her “rest” days.

Says Fran, “I am hooked for life. This program has changed my life, and hopefully indefinitely postponed a surgery that I was not looking forward to. I am deeply grateful to Kristen at the Cincinnati Sports Club for being by my side every side every step of the way and for developing this protocol for me. My leg muscles are so much stronger, and I have also had many unexpected but welcome side effects such as improved cardio strength, lower LDL cholesterol levels, and I have lost a few pounds as well. The benefits are truly countless. My 60-day trial with the club is now up, and I have already renewed as a life long member. I have implemented this workout routine as part of my daily life, and I even stick with it when I travel. I just pack my resistance bands in my suitcase and walk either indoors or outdoors – depending on the weather.”

Says Cincinnati Sports Club Manager Julie Goodchild, “PREP participants, such as our new club member Fran Newman, receive a personal wellness coach to help get them acclimated to the club, and also develop goals that are achievable and tailored to the their specific needs and lifestyle. Personal training, beginner instruction and group fitness classes are also included. More than 100 people, referred by 50 different physicians took advantage of this program in 2012, and half of them decided to join the club after experiencing multiple benefits from a regular workout regimen.”

She adds, “And as Fran has seen firsthand, regular exercise is an important preventative tool that can help protect against heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, non-insulin dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis. It can also help reduce depression and prevent stress. Exercise truly is one of the most powerful medicines, which is why this prescription program makes good, healthy sense. There is also an excellent website ExerciseMedicine.org which I highly recommend as a resource for those seeking information on using exercise as a preventative medicine. PREP is a no risk, 60-day proposition for those in the tri-state. There are no contracts involved, and participants have everything to gain, by adopting an active lifestyle.”
