The Undeniable Link Between Exercise and Mental Wellness |
A huge new study presents overwhelming evidence that physical activity helps relieve mental health disorders. |
“Effectiveness of Physical Activity Interventions for Improving Depression, Anxiety, and Distress: An Overview of Systematic Review,” was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. This study is an umbrella review, which is a comprehensive assessment of decades of research. Dr. Ben Singh, was lead scientist of the study and shared his findings with IHRSA and Club Business International publication. |
In the October 2023 issue of Club Business International, Jim Schmaltz featured the study and summarized the findings from Dr. Ben Singh. Evidence has accumulated in scientific studies over the decades showing the positive effects of exercise on mental wellness. This link between physical activity and mental health is especially relevant today, as the word experiences a significant increase in the prevalence of depression and anxiety.

How Physicians Play a Role |
Physicians can help their patients get the most out of exercise and improve their mental well-being by encouraging physical activity with an exercise prescription. A few recommendations from Dr. Ben Singh, lead scientist of the study: - Start with a conversation. Talk to your patients about their interest in exercise and their physical abilities.
- Set realistic goals. Don’t expect your patient to become a marathon runner overnight. Start with small goals, such as walking for 30 minutes three times a week.
-
Find an activity that your patient enjoys. There are many forms of exercise such as swimming, biking, yoga or dancing.
- Make it easy. If your patient has trouble getting to the gym, find a way to make exercise more convenient for them. They could walk around their neighborhood, do yoga at home, or take a fitness class online.
-
Be supportive. Encourage your patients to stick with their exercise program. Offer to help them find an exercise buddy or to join them for a workout.
- Celebrate successes. When your patient reaches a goal, be sure to celebrate their success. This will help them to stay motivated and to continue exercising.
